Search Tips

Case sensitivity
The search is not case-sensitive, i.e. the same results will be found whether upper or lower case is used.

Umlauts and ß
The use of umlauts (ö, ü, ä) is not necessary, they will also be found using o, u, a. Similarly, search terms can be entered using ß or ss, the results will be the same.

Truncation with *
The truncation of terms with * is recommended, so that all matching terms will be retrieved.
An * at the beginning of a sequence of characters will find all terms containing this sequence.

Example:
Entering "securit*" will retrieve the following terms in the alphabetical index:
  • Securities
  • Security agencies
  • Security alliances
  • Security and defence policy
  • Security building measures
  • Security concepts
  • Security Council (United Nations)
  • Security determinants of foreign policy
  • Security guarantees
  • etc.

Display list of terms

The list of terms contains thesaurus terms (descriptors) of the European Thesaurus on International Relations and Area Studies, their synonyms and other related terms. They can be displayed in two ways:
  • The alphabetical version contains all the thesaurus terms used to describe the contents of literature in the World Affairs Online database, in alphabetical order.
  • The systematic version displays the terms by the subject heading to which they belong.
Select the alphabetic or systematic list from the menu bar.

Enter a search term and click the button.

On the right-hand side of the screen, a list of terms appears, starting at the point where the search term is to be found in the thesaurus. Terms which appear grey and in italics are not searchable, and, on clicking, lead to the term which must be used instead. Clicking on a term will display a term and its hierarchy (subject heading, broader and narrower terms, synonyms and related terms).

By clicking the button which appears to the right of each term, a search with this term is immediately initiated.

Searching the alphabetical list

The alphabetical version of the list contains all the thesaurus terms used to describe the contents of literature in the World Affairs Online database, in alphabetical order.

Using the drop-down menu, first choose the language of the search term.

Enter a search term, (or just the first few letters of it).

Check that the option "alphabetical" has been selected in the menu bar on the right-hand side of the screen.

Click the button.

An alphabetical list of thesaurus terms, beginning with the term entered, will be displayed on the right-hand side of the screen. Terms which appear grey and in italics are not searchable, and, on clicking, lead to the term which must be used instead. The correct term will be displayed in the centre of the screen below the "Keywords" search interface.

The first term from the alphabetical list on the right-hand side of the screen will be displayed with its broader, narrower and related terms in the centre of the screen.

From here, it is then possible to immediately initiate a search with a term by clicking the button. In doing so, a search with this term will be started in all IREON databases and the search results will be displayed on the screen. The thesaurus search is then closed. Per search, only one thesaurus term at a time can be searched with in this way.

Searching the systematic list

The systematic version of the list of thesaurus terms contains all the terms used to describe the contents of literature in the World Affairs Online database, sorted by subject heading.

Example:
The term "Security policy interests" comes under the two subject headings:
  • A08.02 Determinants of foreign policy
  • B03.01 Defence and security policy, general
A search using the systematic form of the list is recommended when several related terms for a particular topic are required.

It is also recommended for users wishing to obtain an overview of the subject headings. For a list of all subject headings, click on the "systematic" option on the menu bar at the right-hand side of the screen.

Using the drop-down menu, choose the language of the search term.

Enter a search term, preferably truncated with an * (see "Search tips").

Check that the option "systematic" has been selected in the menu bar on the right-hand side of the screen.

Click the button.

On the right-hand side of the screen the subject heading to which the search term belongs will be displayed, along with related search terms. Terms which appear grey and in italics are not searchable, and, on clicking, lead to the term which must be used instead. The correct term will be displayed in the centre of the screen below the thesaurus search interface.

The systematic list of search terms is hierarchically sorted. By scrolling the list, using the vertical bar on the right-hand side, and clicking on other subject headings (which begin with a combination of letters and numbers, e.g. C.05.01), further subject headings and their thesaurus terms will be displayed.

The first term from the systematic list on the right-hand side of the screen will be displayed in the centre of the screen, with its broader, narrower and related terms.

By clicking on another term, this will then be displayed in the centre of the screen in the same way.

From here, it is then possible to immediately initiate a search by clicking the button. In doing so, a search with this term will be started in all IREON databases and the search results will be displayed on the screen. The thesaurus search is then closed.

Per search, only one thesaurus term at a time can be searched with in this way.
